Demirtas met EU High Officials in Brussels

Brussels, 1 September 2015 - Middle East Diplomatic (MED) - The co-Chair of the Kurdish party HDP, Selahattin Demirtas met in Brussels several EU officials, among them Federica Mogherini, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and the Commissioner Johannes Hahn, responsible for European Neighbourhood Policy & Enlargement Negotiations. During his visit in Brussels, Mr. Demirtas has been received by official protocols and high level official security protection.

Sources from EU told to Middle East Diplomatic that the ongoing war in the Kurdistan Region in Turkey, dialogue and peace process between Kurds and the Turkish state was dominating the meeting between the HDP President Demirtas and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission Federica Mogherini and the Commissioner Johannes Hahn. The role of EU for constructive negotiations and peace process was also discussed as central.During his meeting, Mr. Demirtas told that there a stronger demands from people for the continuation of dialogue and the peace process should not be left to the hands of AKP.
He told also to the EU officials that a mutual cease fire is needed in order to build the trust between Kurds and Turkey and a third (intern or extern) part which can observe the developments and prevent any violation of the process. Mr. Demirtas call as well the EU to take responsibility in the process of negotiations to insist ceasefire.
 
EU High Representative Mogherini congratulated HDP Chairmen for the two newly appointed HDP ministers and stressed that she is ready to cooperate closely especially with HDP’s interim EU Affairs Minister and Chief Negotiator, Ali Haydar Konca to reinforce the strategic relationship with Turkey and to help Turks and Kurds to solve their conflict. Mrs Mogherini underlined the fundamental importance of keeping the Kurdish peace process alive and on track in the run-up to and after the 1 November parliamentary elections.
In a statement, the High Representative also expressed “the EU`s readiness to work together with the interim Government in order to further strengthen and broaden the EU-Turkey relationship and to address common international challenges, such as the refugee crisis. She explained how important and relevant latest political and security developments in Turkey are to the EU and to the entire region”.
