Turkish oppositionist discussed Armenian Genocide with French Senator

Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Chairman of the Republican People’s Party (Turkish: Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP)), held a meeting with Jacques Beland, Co-Chairman of the French-Turkish friendship group, Senate of France.
The Hurriyet newspaper reports that the bill providing criminal punishment for denying the Armenian Genocide was among the issues on the agenda. The bill is on the French Senate’s agenda.

As regards his opinion on the Armenian Genocide, Kemal Kilicdaroglu said that Turkey has opened its archives, whereas Armenia has not. History must be studies by historians. History must be studied on the basis of archives. Let Armenia open its archives as well, the Turkish political figure said. He claimed that criminal punishment for denying genocide runs counter to the principle of freedom of speech.

In his turn, the French Senator pointed out that the Senate is a “threat,” and Turkey has to present its approach properly.
