All Greeks and numerous countries denounce the unlawful detention of the two Greek soldiers in a Turkish prison and demand their immediate release. On more than one occasion, the Hellenic (Greek) Armed Forces have rescued Turkish pilots that parachuted to safety from Turkish Air Force fighter aircraft that crashed into the Aegean Sea after violating Greek air space and intercepted in mock dogfights by Hellenic Air Force fighters. These Turkish pilots were first checked in established hospitals and then promptly returned to Turkey on board Hellenic Air Force transport aircraft. Similarly, when Turkish military patrols accidentally strayed into Greek sovereign territory at the Evros (Marita) River Greek-Turkish frontier and were intercepted by Hellenic Army patrols, they were simply permitted to return to their side of the border. The unlawful detention of the two members of the Hellenic Army in the Turkish maximum security prison wing at Adrianople (Edirne) is unprecedented, it is not compatible with established procedures and understandings for handling such incidents, and serves only the domestic expedient political goals of Turkish President Erdogan who is rapidly becoming increasingly unpredictable and unreliable for the NATO Alliance.
