Ο πρόεδρος της Συρίας δήλωσε ότι η χώρα του είναι «έτοιμη για την περίπτωση που της επιβληθεί ένας πόλεμος από το Ισραήλ».Η Δαμασκός είναι «έτοιμη» για την περίπτωση να «της επιβληθεί πόλεμος» από το Ισραήλ, καθώς η ένταση στην Μέση Ανατολή αυξάνεται και οι ελπίδες για την επίτευξη ειρήνης στην περιοχή σβήνουν, δήλωσε ο πρόεδρος της Συρίας Μπασάρ αλ Άσαντ χθες, Τετάρτη, σε λιβανέζικο τηλεοπτικό σταθμό.
«Αντιμετωπίζουμε έναν εχθρό που έχει δείξει έως σήμερα ότι δεν καταλαβαίνει τίποτε άλλο πέρα από τη γλώσσα της βίας, και φαίνεται ότι η ειρήνευση στην περιοχή δεν είναι στον ορίζοντα», είπε ο Άσαντ σε συνέντευξή του στα αραβικά στον τηλεοπτικό σταθμό Al-Manar της Χεζμπολλάχ.
Η δήλωσή του σημειώθηκε εν μέσω της νέας έντασης στην περιοχή και των απειλών του Ισραήλ εναντίον της Χεζμπολλάχ και των «υποστηρικτών» της, του Ιράν και της Συρίας.
Ο Άσαντ είπε πως «δεν τρέφει καμιά ελπίδα» ότι η ισραηλινή κυβέρνηση «θέλει» ειρήνη, παρότι πιστεύει ότι «δεν της έχει μείνει καμιά άλλη επιλογή».
Ωστόσο, «όταν σου επιβάλλεται πόλεμος, πολεμάς χωρίς να υπολογίζεις τις ισορροπίες δυνάμεων», πρόσθεσε.
Ισραήλ και Συρία είχαν αρχίσει το 2008 έμμεσες συνομιλίες με την διαμεσολάβηση της Τουρκίας, που τερματίστηκαν στα τέλη της χρονιάς, όταν το Ισραήλ εξαπέλυσε την αεροπορική και κατόπιν χερσαία επίθεσή της στη Γάζα.
Τον Δεκέμβριο του 2009 ο Ισραηλινός ΥΠΕΞ Άβιγκντορ Λίμπερμαν απέρριψε το ενδεχόμενο επανεκκίνησης των έμμεσων συνομιλιών και κάλεσε να αρχίσουν άμεσες συνομιλίες στην Δαμασκό και στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Όμως εντός του Μαρτίου ο Τούρκος πρωθυπουργός, Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν, δήλωσε ότι το Ισραήλ εξετάζει το ενδεχόμενο να αποδεχθεί την διαμεσολάβηση της Τουρκίας ώστε να ξαναρχίσουν οι αποτελματωμένες ειρηνευτικές διαπραγματεύσεις.

Όποιος έχει επισκεπτεί την Συρία καταλαβαίνει ότι αυτές οι δηλώσεις είναι μόνο για εσωτερική κατανάλωση στην Συρία... Ο συριακός στρατός σε σύγκρικη με τον ισραηλινό είναι απλά ένα ανέκδοτο.
