FAZ Η πρώτη ερώτηση, παραδέχομαι ότι ισως είναι περίεργη "πρώτη ερώτηση" για μια συνέντευξη, αλλά θα καταλάβετε στη συνέχεια γιατί σας τη θέτω. Θα περιγράφατε τον εαυτόν σας σαν άνθρωπο με χιούμορ;
Κατάλαβα. Ο λόγος που σας ρωτάω είναι οι καρικατούρες της ΑΥΓΗΣ. Πχ. στις 14 Απριλίου είχαν, στην εφημερίδα του ΣΥΡΙΖΑ, ένα σκίτσο, όπου απεικονίζεται ο Χίτλερ στην κόλαση, να μιλάει στο τηλέφωνο και να λέει: „Ανγκέλα εσύ είσαι;Δεν πιστεύω να δώσεις στους Έλληνες λεφτά;“ Και αυτή απαντάει: „Φυσικά όχι, μόνο μας χρωστάνε Φύρερ μου!“ Αυτό το βρίσκετε αστείο; Γελάτε με τέτοια;
Το ρωτάω γιατί θέλω να θέσω μια γενική ερώτηση που δεν αφορά μόνο τα σκίτσα και μερικά σχόλια στην ΑΥΓΗ. Υπάρχουν πολλές δηλώσεις -δικές σας, δικές σας, μελών του κόμματός σας, ανθρώπων κοντά στο κόμμα, συνδικαλιστικών ηγετών ενταγμένων στο κόμμα σας ή φίλα προσκείμενων- για „τέταρτο ράιχ“, που θέλει να καταλάβει ή να κάνει αποικία του την Ελλάδα. Άλλοι αποκαλούν τον πρώην Πρωθυπουργό ή τον τωρινό σαν Κουίσλινγκ. Πιστεύετε ότι αυτή είναι η γλώσσα που πρέπει να χρησιμοποιούν οι πολιτικοί ηγέτες στην Ευρώπη το 2013;
Αν αυτές οι απόψεις εκφράζονται μόνο από εθνικιστές, γιατί γλυκοκοιτάζετε ημι-φασιστικά κόμματα όπως τους „Ανεξάρτητους Έλληνες“;
„Ημι...“
Τον Ιούνιο του 2012 είπατε πως τα κυβερνητικά κόμματα Νεα Δημοκρατία και ΠΑΣΟΚ „υπέστειλαν την ελληνική σημαία και την παρέδωσαν στην Αγκέλα Μέρκελ“. Τουλάχιστον έτσι μετάδωσαν τα λόγια σας τα μέσα. Μπορείτε να εξηγήσετε τι σημαίνει αυτό που είπατε;
Τον Ιούνιο του 2012 είπατε σύμφωνα με την ΚΑΘΗΜΕΡΙΝΗ, ότι το ΠΑΣΟΚ και η Νέα Δημοκρατία υπέστειλαν την ελληνική σημαία και την παρέδωσαν στην Αγκέλα Μέρκελ. Αν τα λεγόμενά σας αποδόθηκαν σωστά, κάτι το οποίο δεν το γνωρίζω,  τι σήμαιναν;

========================================================

And if you do not want to be my brother...

It takes eight minutes or five questions until Greece’s opposition leader Alexis Tsipras breaks off an interview and throws me out. The story of a communication disorder.

By Michael Martens

On July 21st the Athens newspaper “Avgi” (“Dawn”) published a report that began like this: “The F.A.Z. is one of the largest and most prestigious newspapers in Germany. Therefore, it is logical that they are interested in the developments in Greece and report about it. But their reporter for Greece and the Balkans, M. Martens, seems to have been inspired by the style of a proconsul, which his countrymen, politicians and officials of the troika have the habit of displaying, when they walk around in the offices of the Greek government. He probably believed that such an appearance would be tolerated by all others as well. Thus he thought, the opposition leader was generally available for interviews even of a politically irresponsible nature (...).” The Opposition leader is Alexis Tsipras, head of the Greek Left party SYRIZA, the largest opposition faction in Athens. “Avgi” is his party newspaper, the “Bayernkurier” of SYRIZA so to speak. What the readers of the report were not told: Tsipras had given an interview to this newspaper, but stopped it after seven minutes and fifty-seconds (respectively the fifth question) and kicked the journalist out. Commenting the incident, Danae Badogianni, Tsipras's spokeswoman, wrote in an e-mail to the editor of this paper (subject: “letter of complaint on behalf of Alexis Tsipras about the aborted interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”), that the questioner "had exceeded the limits of journalistic work ethics by far" and was posing his questions based on “rumours, statements of third persons and information taken without double-checking". As he does not grant interviews to “yellow press”, Mr. Tsipras had been “compelled” to break off the conversation.

That a politician finishes an interview and throws out the journalist is fine. No journalist has a basic right to an interview. However, the “rumours, statements of third persons and information taken without double-checking” are statements of Tsipras himself. They can be found on the website of his party and in “Avgi”.

To begin with, let us have a look at the transcript of the audio recording of the interview in a translation from Greek language. It is an unedited, word-for-word rough draft of what was said:

FAZ: “The first question admittedly is maybe a strange first question for an interview, but you will understand later on why I asked it. Would you describe yourself as a humorous man?

Tsipras: "As a humorous man?"

FAZ: “Yes, as a humorous man. As a man who has a sense of humour.”

Tsipras: “It's hard to describe oneself. But I think I have a sense of humour, even though I do not tend to praise myself. "

FAZ: “I understand. The reason I am asking it is because of the cartoons in “Avgi”. For example, on 14th of April this year you had a cartoon in the Syriza-newspaper, in which you could see Hitler, in hell, on the phone, saying: "Angela, is that you? You're not going to give any money to the Greeks, are you? And she replied: “No, no, of course not, we are only in your indebted to you, mein Führer”. Do you find that funny? Can you laugh about that?”

Tsipras: “I have to admit that I have not seen it. But I think that there should be no censorship in the context of satire. We must realize that humorous cartoons, which were published from all sides – In “Focus” as well as in “Spiegel” and in Greek newspapers –, are often characterized by a fine sense of humour, which however is doing wrong to the politically correct thoughts that we must have in the relations of the two people."

FAZ: “I am asking this because I want to ask a more general question. It's not only about the cartoons and some comments in “Avgi”. (There are) numerous statements – by you, by members of your party, by people close to your party, by union leaders affiliated to your party or which are considered to be close to SYRIZA. We have comments of the "fourth Reich" wanting to “dominate” or “colonize” Greece. Others calling (former Greek Prime Minister) Papandreou or now Samaras “a Greek Quisling”. Do you believe this is the language political leaders in Europe of 2013 should use?”

Tsipras: “I realize that you are not well informed. Such political views are supported neither by SYRIZA nor by “Avgi”. They are political views which unfortunately are present in Greece, but they are represented by political parties in the sphere of the nationalist right. SYRIZA is of the opinion that the problem is not in the relationship between the two countries, but is rather a problem of European nature that requires a European solution. SYRIZA opposes the policies of Mrs. Merkel, because these policies are destroying not only Greece, but all of Europe. "

The prospective Prime Minister of Greece speaks quietly and calmly, his facial expressions and body language, however, show that he is annoyed. He probably knows exactly that the claim according to which his party newspaper is not making use of the annoying Nazi-comparisons, is wrong. Even a cursory reading of “Avgi” proves that. Not only cartoons like the Hitler-Merkel-call demonstrate it. About the visit of Finance Minister Schäuble in Athens “Avgi” reports on July 20th under the headline: "Gauleiter Schäuble supports its students." No Nazi-terminology?

One thing, however, is true: The Nazi-comparisons stem from the Greek right as well, especially from the party “Independent Greeks” and their president Panos Kammenos. As an illustration, here are some of Kammenos´ comments taken from the website of his party:

“Those who cooperate with the economic fourth German Reich must know that the Germans killed their collaborators as they withdrew" (speech on June 10th, 2013).

"We have formed as a group with the first ten MPs who dared to say “no” to everything, “no” to the capitulation of Greece, “no” to the German yoke (....) We will unite the Greeks to end the foreign occupation by bankers, loan sharks and their local quislings” (Speech on April 27th, 2013).

Except Germans, the most dangerous enemies of Greece, according to Kammenos, are asylum seekers. On June 13th 2012 he told the TV station "contra-Channel": "We see how they enter into the houses with Kalashnikovs, which previously did not exist in Greece.” If the EU was failing to exert pressure on Turkey, Greece must, after all, deport its asylum seekers to Germany - Schäuble should take care of them: “They all must go.”

It is not surprising that the left-wing populist Tsipras and the right-wing populist Kammenos make common cause. They live in similar worlds. A delegation of Syriza came to visit the party Congress of the “Independent Greeks”, and at a meeting on March 22nd Tsipras and Kammenos discussed possibilities of cooperation. Hence my penultimate question:

FAZ: “If these comments are only coming from nationalists, why then are you flirting with semi-fascist parties like “Independent Greeks”?

Tsipras: "Flirt with?"

FAZ: “Flirt with semi-fascist parties.”

Tsipras: "Semi ...?”

FAZ: .”.. fascist parties.”

Tsipras: "Again you are not well informed. You can not call a party semi-fascist, which is represented in parliament and has a differentiated democratic presence in political life. Even if we do not agree with their views on a range of topics, no one is allowed to label a party that represents a politically correct opinion about Mrs. Merkel, semi-fascist. And I would ask you to change the wording of your question. "

Tsipras is right. The word "semi-fascist" is inappropriate, a foolish exaggeration. “Populist Right-wing” would have been better as a characterization of the party. Shortly after the interview, I apologized to Tsipras in writing for my choice of words. But that was not the point for him. What led to me being kicked out was the fifth question. It read:

FAZ: “In June 2012 you said, (the government parties) Nea Dimokratia and PASOK had “lowered the Greek flag and surrendered it to Angela Merkel." At least that is how you were quoted by media. Can you explain what that meant?”

Tsipras: "In June…?"

FAZ: “In June 2012 you said, according to (the Athens newspaper) “Kathimerini”, that Pasok and Nea Dimokratia Democracy lowered the Greek flag and surrendered it to Angela Merkel. If this is a correct quote – of course I don’t know – what did it mean?

Tsipras: “I cannot remember to have ever said such a thing.”

With this sentence, Alexis Tsipras ends the interview. He complains about malicious questions and says he has "never" claimed Athenian governments had surrendered the Greek flag to Mrs. Merkel. However, a video recording of his final rally before the general election in May 2012, translated by Greek television, proves the opposite. On June 14th, 2012, Tsipras spoke at the Omonia Square in Athens and literally said in front of thousands of followers, Nea Dimokratia and PASOK had “lowered the Greek flag and surrendered it as booty to Angela Merkel." A press release from SYRIZA contains the same sentence, only without the word "booty".

Things continue in a strange way after the interview as well. About three hours after my dismissal, Tsipras spokeswoman Danae Badogianni calls. She demands to be told with which Greek journalists I had met that day and who were my informants to prepare the questions. She mentions the name of a well known Athenian colleague. She says she had been told that I had met with him and wants to know whether that was true. Greek journalists are also contacted by Syriza and asked if they had talked to the German guy. After I repeatedly deny having met a well-known journalist of the newspaper "Kathimerini", Mrs. Badogianni stays persistent: “Are you sure that you have not spoken to anyone else from “Kathimerini” today?”

Counter question: If Alexis Tsipras and his people call a journalist confronting them with their own statements “unethical” – doesn’t this, after all, say more about them and their culture of political dialogue than about the person who cited them?
