French state-owned energy company EDF and German chemical firm BASF have agreed to join the South Stream pipeline, a Moscow-supported pipeline project by Russian energy giant Gazprom to transport natural gas from Central Asia to Southern Europe. South Stream is a competitor to the European Union-sponsored Southern Corridor pipeline project, of which the highest-profile component is the Nabucco pipeline.
